If you go online and look up 'public proxy server' you will get several sites crammed with lists of these servers. Although you have several to choose from, there are certain elements you need to assess. At the top of the things you need to do is to make sure that server you choose is anonymous. A lot of the servers out there are, but some of them may not be. Fortunately these can be uncovered by the website itself, and the information will be stated in the site anyway. Some of the high anonymity types are even more secure and hide all the facts about you, although some are fee based. The question of whether you want to opt for a pay site or not is subject to personal preference. A public proxy server may not always function properly, so you will have to resort to a checker every now and then. This is a program that checks the servers to determine which ones are available and can be relied upon. Even then, it may take some time before you can connect, so you need to have a list of sites to try out. If you go to these websites you may notice that some of them have links to certain applications and software. If you are not familiar with what they do, you should conduct some research as this will allow you to decide if you could make use of their capabilities or not. However, learning to use a public proxy server and where to find them is all you need to know if you just want to keep your IP address hidden from view. If you have no experience in this matter whatsoever and find some of the language and terminology confusing, you can devote some time analyzing the process as to how these servers work, and what other benefits you can get from them (caching is one of these). This might prove useful especially if you decide to download software or set up your own server. But you need to take your time here; a lot of these features can and do modify the system, so be careful. Trying to find a working public proxy server used to be difficult, especially when the technology was new, but now there are several websites out there that can give you the service you need, and in most cases, at no (or little) expense to you.
