If you are looking to try and stay anonymous online, then there is a good chance that you have stumbled upon sites which offer free proxies of one kind or another. You should use free proxy sites with caution, as there may be more going on behind the scenes than you are aware of. If your privacy is important to you, then be cautious when using any kind of free proxy online.
The biggest thing you should be concerned with when using any free proxy provider is that since you are using a service provided by a website or company, there is a good chance that they could be logging all your activity. Your identity may be masked and made anonymous but this doesn't mean that the website you are using to surf online isn't tracking and keeping logs of what sites you visit and your online activity. There are many reasons why they may do this, but do you really want your activity online logged? There is no telling what they may do with such details.
The second biggest threat about using free proxy service providers is that they may be reselling or using your registration details for their own financial gain. Some sites may require you to register before you can use their free service. This is a reasonable request, as they are providing you with a free service, but they may not reveal upfront what they do with your details specifically. You may find that after registering you suddenly receive an unusual amount of spam or junk email. This is common practice for websites to collect details, such as an email address, and then promote paid services or products via email. It may be wise to use a throw away or temporary email address to avoid this problem.
Running a website and a free proxy website takes time and money. It is great that some websites can offer this service for free, but always keep in mind that you need to be careful when using anything online that is promoted as free.
